If the business tells you "no need", believe them. For home services a tip rewards something extra: they came early, carried bags, stayed half an hour longer, left the kitchen better than agreed.
Cash, ATH Móvil or in the app: how to hand over the tip
When you book from our app, the service is paid by card and the business receives it once the job is complete. The tip you give directly to the person when they finish: cash or ATH Móvil, the local payment app almost everyone in Puerto Rico has. That way 100% reaches the person who did the work, with no fees or middlemen.
- Cash: $5, $10 and $20 bills into the hand of the person who did the service. Clearest and most common.
- ATH Móvil: ask the person (not the company) for their number or /username and send it on the spot; you keep a record.
- If you booked through another app that has a tip field, use it only if you know the full amount goes to the worker; if it does not say, cash is better.
- You never need to tip before the service or "to secure" a time slot. If someone asks for that, it is a red flag.
When gratuity is already included in the price
Look on the quote or invoice for "gratuity", "service charge" or "cargo por servicio". A private chef in Dorado or Condado often adds 18% to 20% for themselves and their assistant. Larger tour companies and some day-rate drivers build it into the rate. Restaurants in Condado and Isla Verde add it automatically for tables of six or more.
IVU is not a tip
The 11.5% on the invoice is sales tax (IVU), not a tip for the worker. If the price already includes an 18% gratuity plus 11.5% IVU, add nothing else. Plainly: a line that says "gratuity" is a tip; a line that says "IVU" goes to the tax office.
Always ask before paying: "is gratuity included?". Nobody is offended, and it keeps you from paying 40% extra on a $600 dinner.
If you are a host: who tips the turnover cleaner
You do. The turnover ($70 to $260) is what you pay the business; the guest does not need to tip and you should not ask for it in the listing. What does work with a regular cleaner:
- A December bonus: the equivalent of one extra turnover or $50 to $100, depending on how many times a month they clean for you.
- A $20 to $40 tip on hard turnovers: the guest left the place a mess, there was a party, two turnovers the same day.
- A public review with their name and specifics; for a small business that brings more clients than the tip.
- Paying on time and by card through the booking. A cleaner who gets paid the same day stays with you in high season.
Cultural notes: dollars, what is done and what is not
- Puerto Rico is a US territory: the currency is the US dollar and there is nothing to exchange. US cards work with no foreign transaction fee.
- Tipping in restaurants, bars, salons and taxis is the same as in Miami or Orlando. Skipping the tip at a restaurant is noticed.
- For home services, not tipping is not rude if you paid the agreed price. Haggling after the service is.
- Say "thank you, this is for you" and hand it over. Do not leave it on the table for the cleaner like at a hotel; they may assume it is yours and not touch it.
- Vieques, Culebra and Rincón have fewer ATMs; bring small bills if you plan to tip guides or drivers.
Book cleaning, a driver, a chef or a tour with vetted businesses, fixed price by card and no surprises. The tip, if you want to give one, goes straight to the person who did the work.
