Private transportation in Puerto Rico: airport, between towns and by the day

Private transportation in Puerto Rico comes in three forms: an airport transfer from SJU ($30 to $50 to Condado or Isla Verde, up to $180 to $260 to Rincón or Ponce in 2026), town-to-town rides at a fixed price, and a driver by the day ($350 to $550 for eight hours) to see the island without renting a car. You book with your flight number, pay by card, and the driver waits even if the flight is late.

Key takeaways

  • A private transfer from SJU costs $30 to $50 to the Condado and Isla Verde area, $70 to $110 to Dorado or Luquillo and $180 to $260 to Rincón or Ponce in 2026.
  • A driver by the day (8 hours, fuel included) costs $350 to $550 and works out cheaper than a rental car plus parking for groups of four or more.
  • Booking with your flight number means the driver tracks the real arrival; airport taxis do not wait for a delayed flight.
  • Child seats, oversized luggage and intermediate stops are requested in the booking, not when you get in.
  • Paying by card when you book avoids the price argument on arrival, the most common complaint with informal transport.

The three kinds of private transportation on the island

OptionWhat it is for2026 range
Airport transferArriving and leaving without hauling bags through the parking lot$30 to $260 by destination
Town-to-town rideSan Juan to Rincón, Ponce or Fajardo at a fixed price$90 to $260
Driver by the hour or dayTouring the island, weddings, groups, a night out in Santurce$50 to $75 per hour, $350 to $550 per day

Uber and taxis exist in the metro area, but coverage drops fast outside San Juan and is nonexistent in Rincón, Vieques or the coffee route. There, a booked private driver is the only reliable option.

SJU airport transfers: prices and how it works

2026 reference. Vehicles for 6 or more, or with lots of luggage, run 30% to 50% more.

  1. Book with the date, estimated time and flight number.
  2. The driver tracks the flight and messages you on landing with the meeting point.
  3. Walk out of arrivals; the driver waits with your name or directs you to short-term parking.
  4. You paid when booking, so no cash and no haggling.

Driver by the day: when it beats renting

Renting a car in Puerto Rico costs $50 to $90 a day plus insurance, fuel and parking in Old San Juan or Condado. For a group of four going to El Yunque, Luquillo and back, a driver by the day usually comes out about the same and nobody drives home after the beach.

  • Included: vehicle, driver, fuel, and tolls in most cases. Confirm tolls when booking.
  • Not included: attraction tickets or the driver's meals (on long trips it is customary to offer).
  • Extra hours: charged hourly; agree the rate in advance.
  • Route: tell the driver the plan the night before; they know the island and save you time.

What to ask for in the booking

  • Child seat: many drivers have one; ask, do not assume.
  • Oversized luggage, surfboards, bikes: changes the vehicle.
  • Stops on the way (supermarket, pharmacy) before the rental: quoted separately but common.
  • Language: most metro-area drivers speak English; in the app each business states it.
  • Red-eye flights: confirm the driver works that hour; some add a surcharge between 11 PM and 5 AM.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from San Juan airport to Condado?

Airport taxis have a fixed zone rate, around $20 to $25 to Condado plus luggage. A booked private transfer costs $35 to $50, but waits if your flight is late, takes cards and can bring a child seat.

Is there Uber in Puerto Rico?

Yes, in the metro area and some larger towns. Coverage is thin outside San Juan and close to zero in Rincón, the mountains, Vieques and Culebra.

How long from the airport to Rincón?

About two and a half hours without traffic on highway 22. A private transfer costs $200 to $260 in 2026.

Can I book same-day transportation?

In the metro area, often yes with a few hours notice. For long transfers or red-eye flights, book at least a day ahead.

What if my flight is cancelled?

Message through the booking chat. With 24 hours or more, full refund; with less, the business policy applies, but most reschedule at no charge when the airline cancels.
