Home services in Puerto Rico: a guide for visitors and hosts
In Puerto Rico you can book cleaning, Airbnb turnover cleaning, private transportation, a private chef, guided tours, a handyman, plumbing and landscaping at your home or rental. 2026 reference prices run from $25 an hour for cleaning to $85 to $150 per person for a private chef. This guide covers what each service includes, what it costs, which towns have the most providers, and how to book without taking a chance on a stranger.

Key takeaways
- The eight most-booked home services in Puerto Rico are cleaning, Airbnb turnover, private transportation, private chef, tours, handyman, plumbing and landscaping.
- In the metro area, Dorado, Rincón, Ponce and Vieques you can usually book one or two days ahead; in small towns, plan a week ahead.
- The safest way to hire is a price set in advance, card payment, and reviews from customers who actually paid, not cash sent to a WhatsApp number.
- An Airbnb host who schedules cleaning, handyman and landscaping on a fixed calendar spends less than one who handles every emergency separately.
- A visitor can book a driver, a chef and a tour before landing, in English or Spanish, and pay with the same card they use at home.

Which towns have the most providers
Supply follows tourism and density. Where there are more short-term rentals, there are more cleaners, drivers and chefs available on short notice.
- Metro area (San Juan, Carolina, Guaynabo, Bayamón): everything, with one or two days notice.
- Dorado and Río Grande: cleaning, chef and transport, geared to luxury rentals.
- Rincón, Aguadilla and Isabela: Airbnb cleaning, surf tours and transport; book three or more days ahead.
- Ponce and the south: good handyman, plumbing and landscaping supply; fewer chefs and tours.
- Vieques and Culebra: limited supply; book a week ahead and confirm whether the business is on the island or travels from Fajardo.
How to book without taking a chance
The real risk of hiring in Puerto Rico is not price. It is paying up front to a WhatsApp number and nobody showing up, or someone else showing up. Four rules avoid it almost every time.
- 1
Price set before you confirm
If they say "we will see when we get there", do not book. A serious business quotes by the hour or by the job in advance.
- 2
Card payment, not cash or a transfer to a stranger
With a card you have recourse if the service is not delivered. With a mobile transfer to a number, you do not.
- 3
Reviews from customers who actually paid
Google reviews can be bought. Reviews on an app where only completed, paid bookings can review cannot.
- 4
Everything in writing, in one place
Address, time, what is included and what is not, all in the booking chat. If something goes wrong, there is a record.
For hosts off the island
Ask for photos when the job is done and a checklist per service. A good Airbnb cleaner sends photos of every room without being asked.

The three services visitors book most are airport transportation, a tour and a chef dinner. All three can be arranged before the trip, in English or Spanish, and paid with your usual card.
- Transportation: put your flight number in the booking and the driver tracks the actual arrival. Airport taxis exist, but a booked driver waits even if the flight is late.
- Tours: El Yunque and the bio bay fill up in high season (December to April). Book a week ahead.
- Chef: at least 48 hours to agree on the menu. Ideal for the first night or a celebration.
Frequently asked questions
Can I book services in Puerto Rico in English?
Yes. Most businesses in the metro area and tourist zones serve in English, and in the app each business states which languages it works in.
How much should I tip for a home service in Puerto Rico?
It is not required. 10% to 15% is common for cleaners, drivers and guides when the service was good; 15% to 20% for a private chef. Handymen and plumbers usually do not expect a tip.
What if the business does not show up?
If you booked by card through the app, you get a full refund and the business is flagged. If you paid cash or by direct transfer, it depends on the business.
Can I book same-day?
In the metro area, often yes for cleaning, handyman and transportation. For chef and tours, almost never; book two days or more ahead.
Do prices include sales tax?
In the app, the total you see before confirming is what you pay. Outside the app, always ask whether a price is with or without IVU, because consumer services carry an 11.5% sales tax.
